01What Is Wild Area?

“Wild Area” is a series of real-world events run by Scopely (formerly Niantic), the operator of Pokémon GO. As a new framework separate from the previously dominant “GO Fest” format (which turns one large park into the entire venue), the first Wild Area event was held in Fukuoka in November 2024.

At the Nagasaki event in November 2025, instead of a single park, a new “city-wide roaming” format was adopted. In other words, Wild Area has only been held twice so far — and each time, the venue format was different. That’s the single biggest reason it’s hard to predict what the upcoming Sendai event will look like.

02Timeline to the Event

This isn’t Sendai’s first Wild Area-related event. Including the GO Fest track record, here’s how things line up chronologically.

• May 30 – June 2, 2024
  GO Fest 2024: Sendai (Nanakita Park)

  Sendai’s first large-scale real-world event. 379,000 attendees, roughly ¥7.4 billion in economic impact. This event was effectively the “predecessor” to the current Wild Area series.

• November 16–17, 2024
  Wild Area: Fukuoka (1st event)

  Single venue at Maizuru Park, with a morning/afternoon shift system. The first event in the series. Roughly 396,000 attendees.

• November 7–9, 2025
  Wild Area: Nagasaki

  Shifted to a roaming format across 12 spots around the city. Roughly 420,000 attendees.

• July 12, 2026
  Community Celebration: Sendai (Nishi Park)

  A free, ticket-free one-day event. Possibly a “dry run” for the November event.

• July 16, 2026
  Sendai event officially announced

  Scopely (formerly Niantic) announced Sendai and Mexico City as the 2026 Wild Area host cities.

• As of August 2026 (present)
  Venue and ticket details still unannounced

  Only the event dates are confirmed so far. Tickets are described as “scheduled to go on sale in the next season.”

• November 6–8, 2026
  Wild Area: Sendai (scheduled)

  “Wild Area: Global” is also scheduled to run online around the same time.

03Fukuoka 2024 In Depth

The historic first Wild Area event. Held as a single venue at Maizuru Park (Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City), over two days on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, 2024.

Venue format: morning/afternoon shift system

Tickets were split into a “morning session” and an “afternoon session,” and buyers had to choose one at purchase. Staggering entry times appears to have been aimed at spreading out congestion.

On the ground (from attendee reports)

• “Surprisingly sparse” — less crowded than expected
• The subway wasn’t crowded either
• A line formed for people leaving at the end of the morning session
• Numbered tickets for greeting/photo sessions sold out early
• Food stalls were “somewhat limited,” only a few available
• Some attendees found standing for long stretches tough
• Warm mornings and chilly afternoons meant attendees had to plan for temperature swings

04Nagasaki 2025 In Depth

Held in Nagasaki City over three days, Friday, November 7 through Sunday, November 9, 2025. Unlike Fukuoka, instead of a single park, Nagasaki adopted a “city-wide roaming” format — the first time Wild Area had used this approach.

Venue: spread across 12 spots in the city

Twelve locations in the city center, radiating out from JR Nagasaki Station, were designated as venues. The main sites were as follows.

Access: park and ride

To ease traffic congestion in the city, three parking lots were set up on the outskirts, with a “park and ride” system that had visitors switch to public transport to reach the city center.

Parking fees topped out at ¥620 for the whole period. Because central Nagasaki has a lot of hilly terrain, it was difficult to cover every venue on foot alone, so using the streetcar or bus was assumed to be necessary.

Network congestion and the organizers’ rapid response

Unlike a single venue, having the whole city serve as the venue made it difficult to accurately predict in advance where crowds would concentrate. In practice, there were “moments when crowds concentrated briefly at certain times of day,” and network connectivity reportedly became unstable in some areas.

05Fukuoka vs. Nagasaki Comparison

Based on the results of the two events, a pattern emerges: single-venue events tend to run into “crowding and lines within the venue,” while roaming-format events tend to run into “transit and network infrastructure” issues.

06Pokémon That Appeared at the Past Two Events

It’s not just the venue type that changes each time — the theme of the Pokémon that appear changes too. Knowing which Pokémon you want to catch ahead of time should change how you plan your day.

Rather than a simple two-type setup, Nagasaki adopted an “hour” system in which the spawn theme rotated depending on the time of day.

07What Will Happen in Sendai?

As of August 2026, the venue for the Sendai event hasn’t been announced. Even so, we have some clues to work with.

• GO Fest Sendai 2024 was a single venue at Nanakita Park (Izumi Ward) with 379,000 attendees
• The July 2026 Community Celebration was also a single venue at Nishi Park (Aoba Ward)
• Sendai’s main attractions — Aoba Castle, the Hirose River, Kokubuncho, Gyutan Street — are spread out across the city
• Nagasaki’s hilly terrain was one factor that pushed it toward a roaming format. The area around Aobayama in Sendai is also hilly

This prediction may well turn out differently from what actually happens. Please read it purely as a “hypothesis to prepare around.”

Wherever the venue ends up, expect a lot of walking

Neither Nishi Park (our top pick) nor Nanakita Park (the runner-up) is an event that stays contained within the park itself. Even at GO Fest Sendai 2024, attendees spread out and wandered well beyond the park. Once the venue is announced, it’s safest to assume the effective “play area” — including the surrounding downtown and station areas — will be considerably larger than the venue alone. Early November in Sendai also tends to run colder than Fukuoka or Nagasaki, so you’ll want to prepare on the assumption of walking long distances.

A wider play area also means spending that much longer walking around while carrying your bags. In attendee reports from both Fukuoka and Nagasaki, a common complaint was how tough the long stretches of walking and standing were. How light you can travel makes a huge difference to your comfort on the day.

08Lessons for Attendees, Learned From the Past Two Events

Here’s a summary of the points that came up consistently across the Fukuoka and Nagasaki reports.

Things to watch for within the venue

• A mobile battery pack (high-capacity type)
• Grab numbered tickets for photo spots and greetings early
• Shoes suited to long stretches of standing and walking
• Layers you can add or remove for temperature swings

Things to prepare for if it’s a roaming-format event

• A mobile Wi-Fi router and offline maps
• Check public transit routes and schedules in advance
• Since the venue is spread out, scope out restaurant locations beforehand
• Pace yourself for hills and long-distance walking
